Material Culture’s July 18 auction, “Fine, Self-Taught & Outsider Art,” provides a stage for many categories of art across its 564 lots. The auction house, a leader in folk and self-taught art, brings forward the work of many such artists in this sale, from the United States and around the world. Fine art consists primarily of American and European paintings, prints, and works on paper from the 19th century through the present day.

The sale commences at 10 AM, EST, on Friday, July 18, with Live Auctioneers providing live internet bidding. This diversity of art will be exhibited, free and open to the public, in Material Culture’s gallery space July 16-17, from 11 AM to 5 PM.

One of the leading artists in fine art is American painter March Avery (b. 1932), daughter of Milton Avery. Material Culture held a weekend of auctions dedicated solely to the superb self-taught art collection of Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme. In an exclusive arrangement with the auction house, Demme brought a multitude of sculpture and painting to the sales, totaling over 1,000 lots. “Direct from the Eye: The Jonathan Demme Collection of Self-Taught Art” was a compendium of Demme’s travels and tastes that transcends borders, encompassing Haitian and American self-taught artists from the 1940s to the present, contemporary intuitive painters from Jamaica, as well as art from Africa, South America and Europe.

In its auction “Art 360: Fine, Folk and Self-Taught Art,” Material Culture brings together a rich assortment of art across these artistic categories. The sale’s over 400 lots encompass painting, drawing and sculpture in fine, folk and self-taught art, as well as prints, etchings, and photography. This approach echoes the auction house’s mission to value art above the boundaries of genre, and enables the offering of more frequent sales to the public in which all types of art are welcomed.

The vibrant and diverse pieces in the sale will be on view in Material Culture’s dedicated gallery space March 6 through March 8, from 10 AM to 6 PM. Admittance is free and open to the public.

The auction opens with the work of significant self-taught artists, both American and international. Two pieces by Cuban-American self-taught artist Felipe Jesus Consalvos (1891-1960) start the day. Working in the tradition of Cuban cigar-band collage, Consalvos’ mixed media pieces in the sale, led by “Incarnate Human God” (lot 1), balance playful absurdism with political and social satire. Material Culture presents 600+ lots of diverse and eclectic offerings from local, regional and national estates in their auction, “The Collector’s Eye: February Estates”, on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at 11AM EST.  Antique Oriental carpets start the day and include several rare Tibetan saddle (lot 3) and temple rugs from the Bill Liske collection, as well as many Persian, Caucasian, Chinese and Turkish rugs, kilims, and nomadic trappings.  An interesting group of Central Asian Khotan pictorial carpets (lots 97-102), feature bold, geometric floral arrangements, and offer designers the opportunity to experiment with a style of carpet that is not commonly seen.  Among Persian carpets, from an estate in Bridgehampton, New York, are a late 19th C. Lavar Kerman Prayer Rug (lot 77) and a Silk Souf Keshan (lot 78), the latter with the voided and sculpted pile that typifies souf rugs.
