Prince Twins Seven-Seven working on his piece “Kissing Birds” while he was artist-in-residence at Material Culture. The piece is one of his unique ‘sculpture’s paintings,’ in which he paints multiple layers of wood. In this picture, you can see him laying the top layer of the birds onto what will become their background.

Nigerian artist Prince Twins Seven-Seven working on his piece “Kissing Birds” while he was artist-in-residence at Material Culture. A step-by-step account of the creation of this very picture is detailed in Henry Glassie’s book, Prince Twins Seven-Seven: His Art, His Life in Nigeria, His Exile in America. We are very proud to have sponsored Prince’s work; his international fame has garnered him exhibitions on every continent, and his work is in major museums around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 2005, he was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace.

Self-taught artist Mr. Imagination (aka Gregory Warmack) sits in the West African Asoso chair before beginning his work on our commission to make it into a “throne.” Material Culture has an extensive and wonderful collection of works by Mr. Imagination, whose work is represented in the permanent collections of museums throughout the world.

Mr. Imagination works on his commissioned throne for Material Culture. Over the course of a week, from morning to evening, he tirelessly hammered away at his signature bottlecaps and worked in a variety of media to produce a masterpiece that never fails to delight visitors to the store.
