Guest Speaker: Ramona Austin, Curator for The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries, Old Dominion University. "Unpacking meaning in America’s material culture over discrete historical periods can, in the aggregate, show us who we really are. Such investigation brings into high relief the narratives we make with words and the narratives we make with art and artifacts. For America that investigation involves three major streams; the Euro-American; the African American; and First Peoples. This discussion shows how these streams, in parallel and divergent expression, create the turbulent seas of American identity and ethos discovered in its material culture." (Free, Open to the Public, Unlimited Free Parking) Click to browse the virtual print catalog Browse the Auction Catalog and Bid Live on these Portals:   Absentee Bid Form | Telephone Bid Form | Terms [...]

Odes to the Beauty Surrounding Us | The Miniatures of Curtis Coyote

On Exhibition Now: The Miniatures of Curtis Coyote Reception & Refreshments | Saturday, May 12, Noon-3pm | Free, Open to the Public "I have always been struck by how we strive for a kind of visual perfection. We look for the straight line, the clean smooth surface, an organized and ordered world. But when I look at our surroundings, the outside world, a beautiful chaos reigns. A chipping, cracking, sagging, debris filled chaos is all around us. Here, in miniature, I try to recreate the largely overlooked world we live in every day. The beauty of a disordered scene, so familiar, but rarely celebrated...." Curtis Coyote With over 30 years as a scenic artist for theatre, film and television, Curtis Coyote worked in many media, creating fully realized scenes and stories, props and contraptions. Curtis worked on television shows like “Northern Exposure”, the remake of “The Fugitive”, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Design Invasion”. His Film Credits include “Invincible”, “The Hunted”, “Rocky Balboa” and “The Ring” to name a few. His passion for creation and the skills and talents he brought to his scenic career, have a wonderful outlet in his Miniature work exploring the beauty of a disordered scene.

Film Screening and Talk | “In Rajasthan” | Feb 24.

Film Screening and Talk | “In Rajasthan” With Director/Producer, Katherine Kingsland Winner: Best Documentary, Rajasthan International Film Festival Saturday, February 24, 1:00 PM, Refreshments Free • Open to Public • Unlimited Free Parking In Rajasthan is an intimate look at a disappearing culture in one of India’s most traditional states. It is the story of two families, one Hindu and one Muslim, living in an ancient village in the Thar Desert whose lives have been interwoven for thousands of years with the Rajputs, once their feudal lords and protectors. They speak candidly about marriage, their qualms about their spouses, the caste system, the dubious future of children exposed to the modern world, the afterlife, and the religious differences between them. Today, their traditional way of life is besieged, but their struggles with family, allegiance, religious conflict and death seem timeless. The film is an international collaboration of crew from India, England and the US. It includes internationally acclaimed actor Kabir Bedi as the voice of the storyteller who frames the story, Andrew T. Mackay as the composer of the music score, and Katherine Kingsland as the director/producer. Katherine has worked as a journalist for US and international television networks including [...]
