Art and Revolution: A Conversation with Sandra Levinson
Join us for an afternoon of conversation, food, and community as Material Culture welcomes Sandra Levinson (Executive Director, Center for Cuban Studies and Founder & Curator, Cuban Art Space) for an engaging discussion on the art and visual culture of revolutionary Cuba.
Presented in conjunction with Material Culture’s upcoming HAITIAN AND CARIBBEAN ART OF THE 20TH CENTURY auction, this special event offers an opportunity to explore the rich artistic and cultural currents that have shaped the Caribbean.
Sandra will explore how the Cuban Revolution fundamentally transformed the island’s visual culture, revealing how art became a powerful instrument for shaping national identity and providing social and political commentary. Through the vibrant worlds of poster art, the celebration of Cuba’s rich African heritage, and enduring folk art traditions, she will offer a unique perspective on one of the twentieth century’s most compelling artistic movements.
She will also share the personal story behind her decades-long relationship with Cuba—her travels throughout the island, the beginnings of her renowned collection of Cuban posters and folk art, and her determined legal battle to make it possible to import Cuban art into the United States.
