Fine Early Navajo (Diné) Serape, 54” x 93”, 1840–1860
Woven on a vertical loom with side and end cords, as well as sectional lines. All yarns are handspun singles, except for the red yarns, which are S-spun, single-ply “red ravel” wool, 100% lac-dyed. Excellent condition with only minor restorations. Full technical description available upon request.
While unmistakably a Navajo-woven serape, the blanket’s size and design elements closely align with a recognized group of textiles often referred to as “Hacienda” or “slave” blankets—pieces believed to have been produced specifically for the Hispanic market, and possibly under the direct supervision of a Hispanic patron or employer.
Provenance: Ex–Colorado private collection.
