“We had lunch today at the weekend buffet brunch. The food is amazing — everything was wonderful, but especially the eggplant, and the carrot/pineapple cake, and the BBQ sliders, and the Caprese salad and the green beans, and the friendly staff.”

“This place is a gem!! My friend and I went yesterday(8/15) for lunch and let me just say I am so glad this is right up the street from me because I will be coming back many many times!!! Love the locale. The service was A+. And of course the food was on point. My friend ordered the Mezze platter…olives. hummus..feta..beets..carrots w/ currants..totally amazing my friend is very picky with food and can be critical..the only thing she left on her plate was the pits from the olives. She also had the hibiscus mint tea…she thought it could’ve used a tad more honey…minor issue if you want to call it that. I ordered the veggie sandwich..yum yum yummy!!! Seasoned whole grain pita btw I am not a pita fan…Baba’s made me into one when it’s done correctly! Avocado..tomatoes..crisp lettuce and God knows what else… delish is all I can say..sided with a small fruit salad and some chips. I got the strawberry lemonade a little sweeter than I prefer but again totally minor. We both ordered the vanilla bean panna cota with fresh blueberries and raspberries….heavenly it was like eating ice cream but better so much better..Im making myself hungry just writing about it. So….great location, super fresh yummy food and exemplary service!!!!! A+++++++”

“My husband and I were LUCKY enough to have Chef Aliza of Baba Olga’s cater our wedding at Material Culture. We could not have possibly asked for better food and service. She worked with us to build an incredible menu – she has the BEST ideas, presentations and is a wealth of knowledge regarding all things food. We both had high expectations for the food at our wedding as the husband is a cook – and who doesn’t want good food to go with good memories. Everything was prepared with thought and seasoned properly. There were dates stuffed with almonds and curry paste, a knock out Fattoush Salad, Baharat-Seasoned Grilled High View Farm Leg of Lamb with yogurt-mint dipping sauce was INSANE – there is so much more and it was all mouthwatering. We wish we could eat the entire meal again. THANK YOU THANK YOU hope to eat with you soon!”

“Baba Olga’s is a phenomenal little cafe we tried for the first time today. They do a buffet brunch on Weekends. $22/person sounded high, but when you consider the locally sourced ingredients, variety, expert preparation and professional service, it is a bargain. It is owned by renowned cooking author Eliza Green who stops by each table and chats about food etc. Obviously she is passionate. I am not the kind of guy who gets excited over green beans. Her Roma green beans in tomato, fennel & oregano sauce were exciting. As a carnivore, the short rib sliders with REAL artisinal Cheddar and sour pickle on brioche buns were satisfying, as were the crab and scallion fritters made with local white corn. Homemade strawberry lemonade and Hibiscus blossom iced tea paired with the meal, and iced Turkish coffee accompanied the to-die-for light-as-a-feather local blueberry cheesecake. I didn’t touch on 1/8th of the brunch menu (OK, there was also caramelized brioche French toast and crisp local bacon) .. and lots of other yummy stuff. “I love Baba Olga’s Cafe for lunch!! I work close by in the area and find myself there at least a couple times a week. Aliza is super friendly and very accommodating if you have any dietary restrictions or just want a different variation of what any particular meal offers. The staff are also very friendly and knowledgable. Today I had the summer veggies and hummus plate and once again I was not disappointed!! The menu changes seasonally so you have to try things as you see them! A couple of my other favorite dishes are the Mezze Plate and the Shepard salad.”

“Wow! What a fabulous place for an event. The food was AMAZING! Chef Aliza Green worked with us to create an interesting menu for our guests. She used all fresh, organic ingredients and prepared the food to perfection. Our 250+ guests all raved about the food. And then with all the unique and beautiful items in Material Culture as a back drop for our event, there was a dramatic and beautiful mood. I highly recommend this venue for a variety of events. The staff is lovely and easy to work with and they have a parking lot! Also interesting lunch menu, once again excellent food!”

“The Painted Bride Art Center held it’s 45th Anniversary Celebration at Material Culture this past Saturday and it was a smashing success. The venue is unparalleled with art and furniture from all over the world used as the backdrop or the centerpiece for your event. It’s a visual delight and our guests were impressed as soon as they walked in the door. And, the food was outstanding! Baba Olga’s café is on site and Chef Aliza Green prepared a Caribbean buffet that was absolutely delicious. And the table presentation was more than we could have hoped for. She even had fresh sugar cane in vases beside the buffet table. The owners and staff could not have been more accommodating. They went out of their way to make sure that our needs were met and had creative suggestions to make our event the success that it was. When we asked our guests what contributed to our success they said it was the venue (Material Culture),the food( Baba Olga’s Café) and the band (Urban Guerilla Orchestra). I would highly recommend Material Culture and Chef Aliza Green for most any event. Still smiling from our successful event.”

“We (Painted Bride Art Center) recently hosted a party at Material Center and 5 stars just isn’t enough to illustrate the responsiveness of the Material Culture staff, their willingness to work with us to create a once-in-a lifetime event and the food was incredible. It’s simply one of the best venues in the region. I would definitely recommend this space for your special event.”

“An unexpected, enchanted cafe in philadelphia, with the freshest and most delicious of meals and drinks, all reasonably priced…try the Morroccan salad with preserved lemon… as close as you can get to a day in Marakesch and did I mention that the cafe staff are delightful, friendly and provide excellent service.”

“We worked with Aliza Green and Baba Olga’s Cafe to host our wedding at Material Culture on April 5, 2014. We had ~200 guests and only about 3 months to plan the wedding. It turned out SO well. I cannot say enough about this team. FOOD: Truly amazing. Aliza’s commitment to local and sustainable ingredients really shines through in her fresh, healthy, and delicious food. We enjoyed everything we ate at the cafe every time we went for meetings, etc. And, the guests at our wedding loved the food at the wedding itself. Again and again people said to us “The food was incredible! NOT your typical boring ‘wedding food’ at all!” We’re still hearing about it. The passed apps were a hit – people said the meatballs melted in their mouth and everything was delicious. They set up two buffets and things flowed well. There was enough food for everyone, and the catering operations went smoothly. VENUE: Made a huge impression on everyone at our wedding. Very unique. The Material Culture team worked with us to create unique seating for 200 people in their space. We had a memorable and beautiful ceremony in the rug room area, followed by a cocktail hour in the upper gallery. Everyone really worked to transform the store to work for our event, and we were very grateful for that. The fact that MC is a BYOB venue saved us a ton of money, and it was really fun to design our own bar with cocktails, beers and wines that reflect our tastes/style. I highly recommend Aliza and the team at Material Culture for events and catering. A really unique and delicious option!”

“What a wonderful place! The space is intriguing, peaceful, and lovely – tables, chairs and art from Material Culture create a unique and charming room. Combined with the high ceilings, there is an Old World feel. And the food is special, the kind that delights your palate while making your body happy with all the goodness it’s getting. I had the San Francisco Cobb salad once, and the Mezze Plate another time (so much more than just a hummus plate!), both of which I’ve tried all over, and these were probably the best ever. Their gluten-free bread is also the best I’ve tried. If you’re doing lunch on a weekday and meeting a friend, leave a little extra time to find parking. Weekends, parking is easy. But just GO!”

“I am from out of town and just stopped in Material Culture to shop that wonderful store and saw this very clean, quaint eatery so decided to give it a try. The super rich dark hot chocolate was to die for!!! And I had the mushroom and goat cheese panini which was definitely a culinary delight! Absolutely delicious food, excellent service and very pleasant personnel. Will definitely return there when I am up in this area. Hey Baba Olga’s….Ever think of moving to Milford?? Hummmm?”

“What a great little place. Very unique setting, great furniture and decor, cozy pellet stove. But the important part is that we really enjoyed our meals. We ordered two different sandwiches and a salad. Even the sodas were unusual and delicious (black cherry and root beer). A little out of the way but worth a stop if you are anywhere near. And the store is like a museum so combining the two makes for a nice outing.”

“I visited Baba Olga’s recently with a friend to celebrate her birthday. We were delighted with our time there. Since the Cafe makes use of furnishings from Material Culture, the ambience is interesting,comfortable and very relaxed. More outstanding than the furnishings though, is the food. I had a hard time choosing from the varied menu because everything sounded so appealing. My friend and I split a few dishes so that we could sample a variety. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The dishes were visually beautiful as well as delicious. Chef Green takes great care in choosing her ingredients and combining them in ways that are interesting but not too complicated. We enjoyed two different soups, a short rib sandwich and the lentil salad. Knowing that it was a birthday lunch, the staff surprised us with a piece of cake, compliments of the House. Yes, it was a lot of food, but we ate leisurely and with gusto. I took home some of the lentil salad and it was still delicious the following day. I know that Chef Green emphasizes sourcing local ingredients. I can’t wait to see what she does with local arugula, lettuces, beets, ….the list goes on-the area farms will provide their bounty and Chef Green will work her magic! I certainly will return to enjoy it.”

“What a find!! This is a beautiful but out out of the way spot that gives you the impression you are dining in an International Museum. It is located in the industrial part of lower East Falls and Germantown area. I went here for lunch with a friend, & I have been to material culture many times, But but not since they added the Cafe. Baba Olga’s has a beautiful, Cozy, dining room with artifacts for sale right you dine.. The menu is on a big board when you enter the cafe. You then place your order at the cashiers spot and have a seat and they deliver your food. The cuisine is a mixture of Mediterranean, African, European and American foods. Most of the food is eco friendly and very healthy. They proudly serve green friendly coffees and teas and the coffee is excellent. I had a beef short rib sandwich on a brioche bun with some sharp provolone cheese, a cup of African yam and peanut soup, and they rounded out my lunch with a delicious fruit salad, potato chips and pickles. My guess have a multigrain pita sandwich with hummus, roasted red peppers, roasted eggplant, and other vegetables. Everything we had was excellent. Before leaving I met Aliza the chef. SHe was very warm and receptive and I enjoyed our conversation. It’s the kind of place that you want to bring your friends to experience. I can’t wait until I return.”
