Since 1921, Michaelian and Kohlberg has been a leading pioneer in the oriental rug industry. Many antique rugs from founder Frank Michaelian’s collection reside in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His grandson, Teddy Sumner, an accomplished artist and designer, has directed the company since 1980 and been an important figure in reviving the art of the carpet for over three decades. A hallmark of Michaelian and Kohlberg projects has been a reverence for tradition as well as innovation, and a respect for the people and cultures from which these art forms originate. Since the 1980’s, Michaelian and Kohlberg has been involved in projects that have been credited for reviving the art and craft of natural dyeing and hand-spinning in Turkey, India, Nepal, China, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
