Material Culture brings a truly unique collection of traditional art to auction in its sale The Max Garb Collection of African and Ethnographic Arts, on April 28, 2013. An outsider to the world of tribal art dealers, Max Garb made his living as an elevator operator on Chicago’s Golden Mile, but what he called his magnificent obsession with ethnographic arts spurred him to assemble an extraordinary collection. Started in the 1970s, Garb’s collection is the fruit of “half a lifetime”, by his own reckoning. At one point, it totaled approximately 700 artifacts, largely from Africa, but also from Japan, Nepal, Tibet, Bali, New Guinea, Guatemala and Mexico. The auction will comprise 300+ lots of objects from Garb’s estate, several pieces from his collection having already sold in another auction at Material Culture.

Material Culture Auction Department is proud to offer the GlaxoSmithKline LLC art collection at Auction on April 14th 2013. The global health care company’s Philadelphia branch is one of its two large corporate headquarters in the United States, and pieces from its substantial collection have already sold in previous auctions at Material Culture. The collection was amassed during the 1980s through the early 2000s. This sale features 350+ artworks, including works by Robert Natkin, Benton Spruance, Lance Richbourg, Katharine Steele Renninger, Douglas Dean Ohlson, Murray Dessner, Moe Brooker, Fernando de Jesus Oliveira (Ferjo), Diane Burko, William Nichols, John Andre Gundelfinger, Joseph DiGiorgio, Joseph Sweeney, David Robert Brumbach, Karel Appel, Stephen Woodburn, and many more.
